Too often we get complacent with leadership styles because we are human and attach past perceived success to outcomes as opposed to individuals. As athletes/teams progress and develop, individual motivations and goals can change through increased self-awareness. Below are some examples of how to shift from an autocratic coaching style to a democratic one that empowers and engages your team to be actively involved
- When explaining new plays or strategies, encourage problem-solving and ask your players if they have additional suggestions and their why
- Offer opportunities for players to speak up and share what they are seeing during past game situations or how the team, or privately where you the coach could improve and be more effective.
- Provide clear explanations as to why certain decisions have to be made.
- Whether you agree with what is shared or not, everyone wants to be heard regardless of age, so validate and acknowledge what the kids say as validation doesn’t mean agreement
